Station Fountain – Amer

At the beginning of the 20th century, a decisive
step towards the modernisation of transport
was taken with the introduction of trains from
Olot to the counties of El Gironès, La Selva
and La Garrotxa. The complete railway line
between Girona and Olot was completed on
14 December 1911, although the section from
Amer to Salt had been in operation since 1895.
This was the old railway station on the line
between Olot and Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Along with the station building, some of the
old facilities have been preserved, including
workshops, locomotive depots, tracks,
covered and uncovered docks and even a
railway turntable. The station operated until
1969, when the train was dismantled and the stations repurposed for other uses. Currently,
this station forms part of the recreational travel
route for pedestrians and bicycles along the
Carrilet greenway. The remaining structures
have been refurbished: the main station building
into a hostel, the former workshops as a multipurpose
hall, while the former depot houses a
service point for motorhomes.
