Santa Cristina – Lloret de Mar

Documentary evidence mentioning the Ermita de Santa Cristina (Chapel of Santa Cristina) dates back to shortly after the Black Death. After 1376, there was a sharp rise in the popular devotion to Santa Cristina, which led to the building of this sanctuary between 1764 and 1772.

The chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of the municipality, the protector of those heading out to sea. In the 18th century, with new-found wealth flooding into the town of Lloret as a result of the bustling trade with the Americas, the people wanted to show their gratitude to Santa Cristina, leading to the expansion of the chapel into the current sanctuary, which has a markedly neoclassical style. The chapel is notable for its main altar and various ex-votos given as a gesture of gratitude to the saint, and also for a collection of miniature ships found inside. The Obreria de Santa Cristina is an association in charge of maintaining the chapel and upholding the traditions celebrated at this sanctuary. During year, two main festivals are held: the Aplec dels Perdons (second Sunday in Lent) and the Procession of Santa Cristina (24 July, Lloret’s Festa Major or annual town festival).

A few steps away from the chapel is Santa Cristina beach, sheltered by two large hills that protect it from wind and waves, forever calming the waters.
