Santa Creu d’Horta – Osor

The church of the Santa Creu d’Horta (Church of the Holy Cross of Horta) is considered one of the oldest in the Guilleries massif, with the earliest mentions dating back to 902 AD. It was a suffragan diocese of Sant Pere d’Osor (Saint Peter of Osor) until 1878, when it became an independent parish. The church is located in the centre of the Horta valley, in a place called Puig de Santa Creu.

Until the 14th century, the church was dedicated to the Holy Cross. However, since then Saint James has been venerated as its patron saint. Despite there not being much documentation on the old building, it is quite certain that the earthquakes in the 15th century must have affected it severely. In the 17th century, it was in ruins and, during the 18th century, renovation work was carried out. A new presbytery was built, it was whitewashed, the vault was replaced and chapels were opened up in the side walls. Because of this, and other work carried out during the 19th century, there are no early Romanesque elements.

The current building has Baroque and Neoclassical elements, with a simple façade and a bell tower with a square tower and pyramidal roof. The attached building you can see is the rectory, which has three floors and dates back to the 19th century.
