Abeurador Fountain

The fountain de l’Abeurador takes its name from the curious shape of the container where the water falls, which resembles an animal drinking trough. It is located very close to the right bank of the Colomer stream and is easily accessible, 150 m from the Carrilet Route. The fountain flows from a small transverse wall made of local stone, acting as a spout.

In the forest around the fountain, chestnut trees abound, which require a cool environment and acidic soil to grow. The shaded orientation of the valley and the flow of water create a microclimate that promotes growth. In Amer there is the oldest chestnut plantation in Catalonia—planted by monks in the 9th century—and several chestnut varieties can be distinguished: miquelenca (appears at Sant Miquel), morró, del pelló, tardana (the largest and suitable for roasting)… Chestnuts play a leading role in the Sant Martí Fair held in this town in early November, including the Chestnut Roasters Contest and a popular chestnut roasting.
