Musicians’ Fountain

The Musicians’ Fountain is located in the heart of Amer, in Sant Miquel Square, where Amer’s parish church stood until it was destroyed in 1657 during the First Reapers’ War. The fountain stands at the base of the monument dedicated to the musicians of Amer. The pyramid-shaped monument consists of three sections: a hexagonal base decorated with imitation rustication; a central section made from large blocks of Girona limestone; and, crowning the pyramid, the figure of a seated musician playing the flabiol, with an inscription at his feet: “AMER TO ALL ITS MUSICIANS”.

Amer is known as the “land of musicians” because, since the 19th century, numerous instrumentalists and composers have been born there, and several cobla orchestras have been founded in the town. The most notable include Principal Amerense, Amer Jazz, Principal Unió and La Catalana, among others.

The first cobla formed in Amer was that of the Carreras i Rebugent brothers. Founded in 1863, it consisted of only three musicians. According to some historical sources, the municipality’s second cobla ensemble was created in 1867 and later became the Orquestra d’Amer, known as the Orquestra Vella. However, it soon faced competition from Salvador Masbernat’s Orquestra Nova. These were Amer’s two leading orchestras at the beginning of the 20th century.
