The Viscountcy of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by a number of walled towns and watchtowers.
The cova del Relliguer is an underground gallery carved into the sandstone on the slope below the castle. The entrance is located within the medieval enclosure, very close to one of its main access points (portal de Barcelona) and also to the fortified medieval path connecting the town with the fortress (antic castell). The cave is a hypogeum consisting of a 26-metre descending passageway that leads to a small chamber at a depth of six metres. It may have been used as a shelter and hiding place in times of danger or as a gallery related to the fortification of the hill.
