Sant Esteve de Caldes is a parish church that once belonged to the monastery of Breda. It is already mentioned in 1058 in a restitution made by Countess Ermessenda to Berenguer, Bishop of Girona. The current church is a basilica-plan building with three naves separated by large square pillars supporting six large arches, with four side chapels. The central nave is covered by a pointed barrel vault and the side naves by quarter-circle section vaults.
The Romanesque origin of the church is evident in the apse, which has two Romanesque apsidioles with windows and decorated with Lombard bands. The bell tower is a square structure that has undergone several modifications. At the upper part there are four pairs of elongated semicircular-arched openings. Both the bell tower and the church have been subject to different renovations over the centuries.
Among the most recent works, a Roman inscription slab was discovered when lifting the floor slabs, dedicated to “Lucio Emiliano Celaciano, of the Quirina tribe”, as well as a sarcophagus with an inscription and a 1270 slab commemorating Berenguer Lambardus.
