Ranch Square

The Plaça del Ranxo, also known as Plaça de l’Oliva (Plaça Lluís Companys), receives this name from the festival of the Rancho that is celebrated on Carnival Tuesday in Vidreres.

The Rancho consists of the preparation of a collective stew that has become part of the intangible cultural heritage of Vidreres and is considered one of the most outstanding gastronomic celebrations in Catalonia. The whole town gets involved in this festival: butchers, farmers, neighbors and shopkeepers contribute ingredients such as white sausage, black sausage, vegetables, chickpeas and potatoes. The ranchers cook around thirty pots of 100 liters each to satisfy the great demand for rancho on Carnival Tuesday. On the eve, following tradition, members of the festival committee, the ranchers, the pubilles, the heirs and a popular parade tour the town and the farmhouses to collect the ingredients —or financial contributions— that will be cooked the next day outdoors in large copper pots over a wood fire, for everyone who shows up. When the day arrives, the ranchers, dressed in their best, start early in the morning to light the fire that will make the Ranch boil. The strength, energy and passion of all the ranchers and collaborators make it possible for everyone to be served a good dish of this traditional local meal at noon. The enthusiasm, pride and effort of all the residents make this day the most special party of the year in Vidreres.
