The oldest structures of Montsoriu Castle date back to the late 10th century, and at that time it was configured as a rock castle. During the 12th and 13th centuries, a first major renovation was carried out. Montsoriu was described by the chronicler Bernat Desclot as “one of the most beautiful and noble castles in the world”.
The general appearance that we see of the castle today corresponds to the last great transformation promoted by Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera in the mid-14th century, in which an impregnable castle of concentric circles was built, formed by three large spaces: the sovereign enclosure (the highest, oldest and strongest part of Montsoriu), the parade ground (conceived as an authentic Gothic palace) and the jussà enclosure (thought of as a lower albacar).
