There are records of this parish church dating back to the year 942 as a suffragan parish of Sant Hilari Sacalm until the 15th century, when it became a dependency of Arbúcies as part of the domains of the House of Cabrera.
The original Romanesque building has been considerably transformed over the centuries, with various additions and modifications, most notably in 1619, when the church underwent a general restoration, and 1890, when the bell tower was built. Later, in 1940, a bridge was constructed that still connects the church to the old rectory to this day.
The current building has an elongated nave with a semicircular apse containing chapels added in the 17th century, as well as various adjoining rooms. The façade is simple with a voussoir portal and two ox-eye windows. To the south of the apse, the square bell tower has a roof sloping on all four sides, which, unlike the roof of the church itself, is made of slate. This bell tower was built in the 19th century to replace the old bell gable.
The Arbúcies valley, which included the parishes of Sant Quirze and Santa Julita d’Arbúcies, with the suffragan parishes of Santa Maria de Lliors and Sant Pere Desplà, and the parishes of Sant Cristòfol de Cerdans and Sant Mateu de Joanet, belonged to the lands of Montsoriu Castle from the 11th century onwards, before becoming part of the bailiwick of Orri or Arbúcies. In 1624, the bailiwick of Orri was acquired by the Sarriera family after the dissolution of the old Viscountcy of Cabrera.
