Fountain of Musicians – Amer

The Font dels Músics water fountain is located at the very heart of Amer, in the plaça del Sant Miquel square, where the parish church of Amer stood until it was destroyed in 1657 during the first period of the guerra dels Segadors, or Reapers’ War. It sits at the base of a monument dedicated to the musicians of Amer.

The pyramid-shaped monument is structured in three parts: the hexagonal base, comprising a false bossage; the central part, made of large blocks of Girona limestone, and finally, crowning the pyramid, the figure of a seated musician playing a small Catalan flute called a flabiol, with an inscription at his feet: “AMER A TOTS ELS SEUS MÚSICS” (Amer/Love to all your musicians).

Amer is known as the “land of musicians”, with many instrumentalists, composers and traditional cobla music ensembles coming from the village since the 19th century, the most wellknown being Principal Amerense, Amer Jazz, Principal Unió and La Catalana, among others. The first cobla group to originate in Amer was that of the Carreras i Rebugent brothers, formed in 1863 with just three musicians. According to some historical sources, a second local cobla group formed in 1867 and went on to become the Orquestra Amer, also known as the Orquestra Vella (Old Orchestra). It was soon to be in competition, however, with Salvador Masbernat’s Orquesta Nueva (New Orchestra). These were the two leading orchestras in Amer at the beginning of the 20th century.
