Maçanet de la Selva stretches across the heart of an ancient lake, traces of which still remain today, and which is known as the Estany de Sils. The flat landscape of this former lake, as well as the volcanic hills found within the municipality, have strongly shaped the history of the town up to the present day.
Over the centuries, Iberians, Romans and feudal lords settled in this territory, attracted by the mild climate and the abundance of water. From this past, heritage elements such as the Iberian settlement of Montbarbat, the castle of Torcafelló, the church of Sant Llorenç and the ice well of Buscastell stand out, many of them linked through the ancient Via Augusta.
Legends such as that of Pere Porter and the Estany de Sils still endure in the municipality, as do many traditions, which can be discovered during the Fira de pagès i artesania, held during the Festa del Roser, the small festival of Maçanet.
