Tree of Liberty – Arbucies

In the very centre of the Town Square there is one of the symbols of the town of Arbúcies. It is the Square Tree or Tree of Liberty, declared a monumental tree by the Government of Catalonia in 1990. The tree, which provides shade in the square, has been an inspiration for many painters and poets. The exact date of its planting is unknown, although according to Víctor Balaguer it was planted to commemorate the September Revolution of 1868. Others argue that it was planted in 1873 to commemorate the proclamation of the First Republic and as a symbol of freedom.

«[…] and, rising, magnificent, on tiptoe,
it becomes again the Tree of Liberty.»
(Rafael Vilà i Barnils)
