The church of Santa Coloma de Farners – Santa Coloma de Farners

The parish church of Santa Coloma de Farners is the main temple in the urban centre and one of the most important religious buildings in the comarca of la Selva. It is a large architectural complex located in the historic centre of the town.

The current building is the result of a major enlargement begun in 1805 and developed between 1805 and 1832, with a Latin cross floor plan formed by a central nave, two side aisles and a transept. The central dome rises over pendentives and marks the focal point of the interior space, which includes side chapels, a sacristy and devotional areas. The main façade stands out for its granite staircase, its door with a plain tympanum and a large rose window above.

The bell tower, 36 metres high, is one of the most prominent parts of the complex. Built with granite ashlar blocks, it combines Gothic and Neoclassical elements, with bell openings and an integrated clock. The origins of the church date back to the 10th century, with destructions in the 10th century and later reconstructions, and it has undergone multiple renovations until reaching its current configuration.
