River environments are places of outstanding heritage value, both for their environmental and productive significance and for the important social role they play. The Tordera River and the Arbúcies Stream are excellent examples of watercourses that have greatly shaped both the landscape and the human settlement of their surroundings. Among the many functions they fulfil, they also offer significant opportunities for tourism development, particularly through active tourism.

The Tordera and Arbúcies Stream Route project was created through the joint commitment of the public authorities promoting the initiative to enhance the natural, cultural and intangible heritage associated with the Tordera River and its basin. The project promotes hiking and cycle tourism along these two important waterways, following the example of other renowned river routes such as the Danube Cycle Route, the Rhône Route, and, closer to home, the Muga Nature Trail in Alt Empordà.

The Tordera basin enjoys an exceptional setting for a project of this kind, thanks to its excellent transport connections, its proximity to the Costa Brava, the Montseny Natural Park, well-developed tourism infrastructure, outstanding coastal and mountain landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. By adapting the route for hiking and cycling, the project aims to attract visitors interested in discovering the region and its heritage, diversify the current tourism offer, help reduce seasonality, strengthen territorial cohesion, and become a driver of economic activity for local service providers, businesses and public facilities throughout the participating municipalities.
