Old schools of Sils

From 1925 until the early 1980s, the old schools of Sils stood on this site, which remained in operation until the mid-1970s, when the activity was moved to the current Jacint Verdaguer school.

The start of the 1920s in Sils was marked by the Town Council’s need to relocate public education from the carrer de les Mallorquines, an old school that occupied an unsuitably rented building that could not meet the needs of the growing urban core of Sils. Multiple financial difficulties hindered this project, until municipal resources were found that allowed the construction of a proper building. The Town Council intended to combine educational tasks with municipal administration in the same building, especially considering that Sils did not have a town hall either and occupied a rented building on carrer Major. Finally, the order of the educational authorities prevailed to allocate the building exclusively to the educational uses initially planned.

The school was inaugurated on the first Sunday of March 1925, coinciding with the Tree Festival (Festa de l’Arbre). It had a functional design, with two classrooms, one for boys and another for girls. This division was also maintained during recess, where a small brick wall separated the boys’ playground from the girls’. The facade on carrer Major was well ornamented. Until the last third of the 20th century, it was the only public building in Sils and the setting for much of the childhood of the boys and girls of Sils.
