The church of Sant Hilari Sacalm is a building that brings together, in one place, almost the entire history of the municipality. Located in the historic centre and documented as early as the year 922, it should not be understood only as a church, but as a complex that has changed alongside the town, its needs and the major events that have shaped the territory.
Its Romanesque origins are still visible in specific elements, such as the remains of an old wall, the doorway decorated with archivolts and the apse that can be seen from the outside. These fragments make it possible to imagine the church consecrated in 1199, before the earthquakes of the 15th century forced its reconstruction and its new consecration in 1480. Since then, Gothic, Neoclassical and contemporary reforms have added successive layers to the building, shaping its present appearance.
One of its most visible features is the bell tower, with a square base and an octagonal upper section, completed between 1921 and 1922 according to a project by Josep Maria Pericas. On the façade, decorated with sgraffito, the inscription “DOMUS DEI ET PORTA COELI” presides over the main entrance, reached by a double staircase. Inside, the three naves and the various artistic spaces preserve the memory of a building that has been enlarged, rebuilt and reinterpreted over the centuries.
