Church of Santa Maria de Salitja Vilobí d’onyar

The church of Santa Maria de Salitja, also known as Mare de Déu de l’Assumpta, is located in the village of Salitja and forms part of the parish complex of the municipality of Vilobí d’Onyar. It is a church of ancient tradition, mainly rebuilt between the 17th and 18th centuries.

The building has a rectangular floor plan with a polygonal apse and a Baroque–Neoclassical façade. The doorway features a basket-handle arch framed by pilasters and topped by a semicircular pediment with a central niche housing the image of the Virgin. The façade also features an oculus and a mixtilinear crowning with stone decorative elements.

The origins of the parish are documented as early as 1019, when it is mentioned as being linked to the castle of Brunyola and the monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda. The current church was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War, when it suffered the destruction of its original interior elements.
