Can Puig forest trenches – Vidreres

In this pine forest, known as the Bosc de Can Puig, you will find a series of trenches from the Spanish Civil War, consisting of four pits excavated in the ground with a roughly rectangular shape and rounded corners. These are spaces of about five to ten square metres located in the middle of the forest. The trenches are between one and one and a half metres wide and about eighty centimetres deep. The origin of these trenches is linked to the airfield of the Republican army, which was established on the plain between the Bosc de Can Puig and Can Batllosera. In 1938, this place was used to hide and protect fuel drums for the airfield from possible air attacks. The fuel was stacked in piles, similar to woodpiles. It also served as a storage site for bombs.

The pits were partly dug by local people who worked there as labourers. Since 1939 it has been abandoned and the forest has continued to grow, but since it is mainly pine trees, there is almost no undergrowth, allowing its shape to be clearly observed. During the visit, please respect the environment and avoid eroding the edges by observing them from a distance.
