Can Dalmau – La Cellera de Ter

This is a large, three-storey house with a gable roof. The central keystone of the vaulted doorway reads “1601”, while the tower bears the date “1596”. Between the windows there is a large sundial, and the jambs feature two large zoomorphic motifs, which are quite deteriorated, but the evidence suggests that they might represent two lions.

During the Spanish Civil War, Can Dalmau was the headquarters of the POUM (Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification), of the CNT (National Confederation of Labor), the Joventuts Llibertàries (Libertarian Youth) and the Unió Republicana d’Esquerra (Republican Union of the Left). It later also functioned as a school run by the CENU (New Unified School Council)— created during the revolution—and had 68 pupils and one teacher.
