The Viscountcy of Cabrera, in religious terms, was made up of several parishes with their respective churches and hermitages, which provided religious services to the community. Likewise, several monasteries of different religious orders were founded there.
The earliest historical records of the parish of Santa Maria de Vidreres date back to the 11th century. A few centuries later, in the 1358 document Constitucions dels castells, this parish is mentioned as a possession of the viscounts of Cabrera, along with the castell de Sant Iscle, a military building that formed part of the Viscountcy and dominated the territory of Vidreres from its construction in the 12th century. The patrons of the town, venerated today in a side chapel of the parish church, are sant Iscle and santa Victòria, as in the Middle Ages the saint’s relics had been deposited in the castle chapel. The present church of Santa Maria is the result of the major architectural renovation carried out at the end of the 18th century, in the Baroque-Neoclassical style.
