The Viscountcy of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by a number of walled towns and watchtowers.
The castell de Sant Iscle was constructed in the 12th century and formed part of the Viscountcy of Cabrera. In the 13th century, it underwent major alterations: the keep was demolished and a rectangular enclosure with towers at its four corners was built. At the beginning of the 14th century, it was the residence of Elionor d’Aguilar, mother of Viscount Bernat II de Cabrera. Further renovations were carried out in the 15th century, and the earthquakes and the Guerra dels Remences affected the castle, which was finally abandoned suddenly around the year 1500. Only the capella de Sant Iscle remained in use, and processions continued to be held there until the mid-19th century. The relics of sant Iscle were kept in the chapel, and some of them were transferred to the monastery of Breda in 1263.
