The Viscountcy of Cabrera bordered territories controlled by other feudal lordships (Cardona, Montcada, Cruïlles, the Church, etc.), with which it maintained relations that, depending on the period and circumstances, could be more or less cordial.
The castle was built around a keep, probably dating from the 11th century, and was surrounded by walls with arrow slits, wall walks, a possible moat on the northern side, and residential quarters probably constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, substantial remains of which still survive. In the room located to the north of the keep, the springings of a vault built with travertine ashlar blocks are preserved. Around the 12th century, the castle became the centre of the castral territory of Fornils, which included the parishes of Sant Martí Sacalm and Susqueda. The castle belonged to the viscounts of Cardona; in the 14th century, it passed to the counts of Pallars Sobirà and, in 1369, Gilabert de Cruïlles i de Mallorca acquired its rights together with those of the territory of the castell de Rupit.
