The Viscountcy of Cabrera had a dynamic commercial economy, centred on its markets. It was structured around a network of roads linking villages and urban centres, while also benefiting from good connections to maritime trade routes.
This covered ice well is the largest in Catalunya. It is first mentioned in documents dating from the mid-17th century, when it belonged to Miquel Buscastell. Ice collected during the winter from nearby ponds was stored inside the well in alternating layers with branches or plants to help preserve it. Most of the ice from Buscastell was sold in Girona, although it was also distributed to Barcelona and, from there, to Mallorca. The Taller d’Història de Maçanet began restoration work in 1997. In the case of the pou de glaç de can Villà, also in Maçanet, documentary evidence records that in 1660 Guillem Ramon de Montcada, Viscount of Cabrera, granted permission to collect ice from the estany de Sils.
