Sant Grau d’Ardenya – Tossa de Mar

Sant Grau d’Ardenya is a large, neo- Romanesque church in Tossa de Mar, located near a hill and attached to a construction that looks like a farmhouse. It has two floors, with two roof surfaces sloping down to the sides and the enclosure is made up of a church, a central patio and terraced rooms on the north, south and west sides. Moreover, near this enclosure there are several hotel facilities from the 1950s and 1960s, in ruins, including the water tower, the pond and the Sant Grau d’Ardenya wayside cross made of Girona limestone.

The Sanctuary’s patron saint is Saint Gerald of Aurillac, Auvergne-France (9th – 10th century). According to legend, there used to be a small oratory on this site where the saint slept and it was Mary of Montpellier, mother of King James I the Conqueror who, in 1200 AD, brought some relics of the saint there. These supposed relics are kept in the parish church of Sant Vicenç de Tossa (Saint Vincent of Tossa).

The Sanctuary of Saint Gerald is one of the most emblematic places in Tossa and in this region, and the annual gathering is held here on 13 October. It is traditional to go there and eat rice and rack of lamb, with people gathering in small groups around the sanctuary. Afterwards, people dance sardanes, a live lamb is raffled off and some 17th century (1696) goigs (songs) are sung in honour of Saint Gerald.
