Plaça de la vila – Hostalric

The Plaça de la Vila—or Town Square—is the oldest square in Hostalric, dating back to the 12th century and the origins of the old medieval town. This old town centre grew thanks to the market privileges and town charter granted by King James I to Viscount Guerau V of Cabrera. Initially, this square housed the Ajuntament d’Hostalric (Municipal Council), until it was relocated to the current Town Hall building. Look at the fountain in the square. It is the fountain of the Gegants d’Hostalric (Giants of Hostalric), with the figures of Ramon Berenguer II, known as Cap d’Estopa (Towhead, because of his extremely thick hair), Maud of Apulia (his wife), and the giant priest Pere Xifra. Would you like to meet them? Come back for the Fiesta Gegantera (Giant Festival) and join in the parade!
