Església de Santa Maria de Saltija – vilobí d’onyar

The church of Santa Maria de Salitja is one of the most representative buildings in the village of Salitja, within the municipality of Vilobí d’Onyar. Documented since the Middle Ages, it has served for centuries as the centre of religious and social life for this small rural community.

On one hand, the main body of the church is of Romanesque origin, characterised by a simple structure with a single nave and a semicircular apse. Despite later transformations, it still preserves elements that allow this first construction phase to be identified, particularly in the layout of the walls and certain architectural details.

On the other hand, over the centuries the building underwent various renovations and extensions that altered its original appearance. These interventions introduced new volumes and decorative elements, adapting the church to the needs of each period and reflecting the evolution of religious architecture in the area.

Set in an open and peaceful landscape, Santa Maria de Salitja retains the character of rural churches that once structured the life of farmhouses and small scattered settlements. The complex is a good example of how these buildings have evolved over time, combining history, architecture and landscape.
