Ermita de Santa Bàrbara – Anglès

The first record we have of the chapel dates back to the year 1310, although the building as we see it today is the result of an 18th-century reconstruction. Records tell us that the chapel of Santa Bàrbara was built in 1419. The current building was reconstructed in the 18th century, and restoration work was carried out in 1995 and 2005.

The chapel has an elongated nave with the roof sloping towards the façade. The door is a voussoired round arch. The bell gable is particularly remarkable, with a surbased arch that sits atop the façade. Nowadays, the chapel of Santa Bàrbara is divided into two parts: a two-storey shelter and the chapel itself.

Just like the town of Anglès itself, the chapel belonged to the Viscountcy of Cabrera from the 11th to the 17th century, when the Olmera family, the bailiffs of the castle, purchased the jurisdiction from the Viscount.

The chapel is now a local place of worship and the venue for the annual Santa Bàrbara applec festival on the second Sunday of May. Over the course of the day, participants dance the traditional sardana, the new hermit of the year is named, and the customary mass is held at the chapel.
