The Viscounty of Cabrera bordered territories controlled by other feudal lords (Cardona, Montcada, Cruïlles, the Church, etc.), with which neighbourly relations were established that, depending on the era and circumstances, could be more or less amicable.
The castle of Sant Joan is first recorded in 1041 in a donation by the viscounts Guifré and Ermessenda (the founding couple of the Viscounty of Cabrera) to Sicardis, lady of Lloret and sister of Ermessenda. In the 12th century, the castle came under the lordship of the canons of Girona Cathedral, and formed part of their domains until the beginning of the 19th century. From the second half of the 17th century, activity at the castle declined and eventually only the main tower was used as a lookout post, which in 1805 was practically destroyed by the British fleet. The castle fell into oblivion until the process of its recovery began in 1965.
