The viscounty of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was supplemented by a number of walled villages and watchtowers.
The Montfort Tower is located at the boundary of the municipal districts of Riells i Viabrea and Arbúcies, upon the hill of the same name which connects and overlooks both valleys. It is a military construction consisting of a circular tower surrounded by a small walled enclosure, built in different phases between the 12th, 13th, and the first half of the 14th centuries. Defensive details can still be seen, such as the embrasures in the tower and the steep defensive wall. In the medieval period, it was part of the defensive system of Montsoriu, the principal castle of the Viscount of Cabrera, from which it was visible, carrying out the role of a vanguard watchtower for the control of the zone and its communication links.
