The Viscountcy of Cabrera was a territory which, from a religious point of view, was made up of a number of parishes, each with its own churches and hermitages providing religious services to the local community. The territory also included several monasteries belonging to different religious orders.
The Church of Sant Llorenç was built between 1040 and 1070 in the Romanesque style, which is most clearly visible in the lower part of the apse. In 1207, the parish priest was Guillem de Cartellà, a canon of Girona Cathedral and a member of the prominent local Cartellà-Maçanet noble family, who were vassals of the viscounts of Cabrera. Further elements were added to the original church during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, and in the 17th century the sacristy was built adjoining the apse. In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, members of revolutionary organisations set fire to the church and destroyed its furnishings and religious images. After the war, a copy was made of the Mare de Déu de Cabrera, whose original image dated from the 14th century.
