The Viscountcy of Cabrera bordered territories controlled by other feudal lordships (Cardona, Montcada, Cruïlles, the Church, etc.), with which it maintained relations that, depending on the period and circumstances, could be more or less cordial.
The castell de Sant Joan is first documented in 1041, in a donation from the viscounts Guerau and Ermessenda (the couple who founded the Vescomtat de Cabrera) to Sicardis, lady of Lloret and sister of Ermessenda. In the 12th century, the castle came under the lordship of the canons of Girona Cathedral and remained part of their domains until the beginning of the 19th century. From the second half of the 17th century, activity at the castle declined and, eventually, only the main tower was used as a lookout point; in 1805, it was almost completely destroyed by the British Navy. The castle fell into neglect until 1965, when its restoration process began.
