Tower of Pega – Riells and Viabrea

The viscountcy of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and fortified houses, which were the seats of political and military power for the nobility in the Middle Ages. This defensive system was supplemented with a number of walled-in villages and watchtowers.

Pega’s Tower, the residence of Busquets in the Middle Ages, was previously a strong house constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. It consists of a building with a rectangular floor plan, with a central patio and numerous interior rooms. During most of the 13th and 14th centuries, the lords of the strong house of Busquets were also the undercastellans of Montsoriu, the principal castle of the Viscount of Cabrera. Thus, they occupied second place in the hierarchy responsible for the governance and defence of Montsoriu Castle. The Busquets residence was abandoned, possibly over the course of the 15th century.
