The Ardenya massif is one of the places with the highest concentration of megalithic monuments in Catalonia. In the county of La Selva, these monuments can be found in the mountainous areas to the north of the municipality of Tossa de Mar. Constructed between the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, the structures have given rise to numerous legends and mysteries, stirring people’s curiosity in regard to their uses and meaning.
The megaliths around Tossa include three remarkable paradolmens (burial monuments that partially took advantage of a natural cave) and two menhirs:
The Pedra-sobre-altra Paradolmen (2500-2200 BC): Part of the access corridor and chamber is well preserved. The large rock that crowns this chamber is particularly remarkable.
The Garcia Paradolmen (2500-2200 BC): Smaller than the previous dolmen, the corridor is shorter. The burial chamber is perfectly preserved.
The Ses Rates Paradox (2500-1800 BC): It has a double chamber covered by a large slab.
The Avi Menhir (3000-2500 BC): A granite menhir 1.75 m tall, 1.25 m wide, and 30 cm thick.
The Montllor Menhir (3000-2500 BC): A granite menhir 2.45 m high, 90 cm wide, and 70 cm thick, with a pronounced notch in one side.
