The site of the Font del Llop (or Wolf spring) is an ancient volcano which produced a phreatomagmatic eruption. This is an event caused by the sudden cooling of magma when it comes into contact with water, resulting in fractionation and an explosive eruption on the surface. Where the Font del Llop is located today, outflowing magma from the volcano’s eruption ran into an aquifer. This generated a large explosion that blew the volcano away and caused the creation of a natural pothole.
