This school, sometimes referred to as the Escola Busquets, is the earliest documented school in the village of Vallcanera. It was owned by the Baster family and stood next to their magnificent summer house, known as Can Busquets. Directed by teacher Conxita Pagès, the school was attended by many local children from Vilobí, Vallcanera and Riudarenes. Today few remains of the building stand, and if not for the archived photographs by Valentí Fargnoli, it would be hard to imagine the life to which this seemingly wild and isolated place once played host.
In 1929, a new school was built in a more central location, near the village church, on land provided also by the Baster family. This second school, called simply the Escola de Vallcanera, remained active until 1976, from which time children were to attend school in the town centre of Sils.
With the closure of the school, the building fell into gradual disrepair, until it was refurbished by the municipal council. In 2009, it re-opened as a civic centre, to begin a new phase of public service for the people of Vallcanera.
