Church of Santa Maria de Salitja

The Church of Santa Maria de Salitja, also known as the Mother of God of the Assumption, is located in the village of Salitja and forms part of the parish complex in the municipality of Vilobí d’Onyar. This historic place of worship was largely rebuilt during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The building has a rectangular floor plan, a polygonal apse and a Baroque-Neoclassical façade. Its segmental-arched doorway is framed by pilasters and crowned by a semicircular pediment with a central niche housing an image of the Mother of God. The façade also features an oculus and a curved gable decorated with stone elements.

The parish is first documented in 1019, when it was associated with Brunyola Castle and the Monastery of Sant Salvador de Breda. The present church was rebuilt after the Spanish Civil War, during which its original interior elements were destroyed.
