Church of Sant Martí Sacalm – Susqueda

The church of Sant Martí Sacalm is located in the small settlement that forms the centre of the municipality of Susqueda, at about 835 metres above sea level, in a mountainous setting with open views over the Guilleries and the Far cliff. It is a sober building but highly representative of the region’s religious landscape.

The church has a single rectangular nave with a pitched roof and a simple façade. The main doorway is a segmental arch framed in stone with a monolithic lintel, featuring decoration with pinnacles and vegetal motifs, a shell-shaped niche, and the inscriptions “JESUS” and “MARIA” with the date 1786. The façade also includes an oculus and a triangular pediment, while the bell tower is a square structure with semicircular arched openings.

The church has medieval origins, documented before 1150 as “Cantaluporum” or “Cantalobs”. It was consecrated in 1199 and later rebuilt after the earthquakes of the 15th century, with a new consecration in 1480. The current building is the result of various renovations between the 16th and 18th centuries, with the definitive configuration of the façade in the 18th century.
