The Viscounty of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which were the centers of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by the presence of several walled towns and watchtowers.
The first historical news we have of the castle is related to the testament of Viscount Guerau V de Cabrera, dated 1242, when he created for his son Ramón a small heritage consisting of the castles of Anglès and Brunyola. The medieval castle suffered systematic destruction, especially during the 15th century, due to the earthquakes of the Olot series and the War of the Remences. The few remaining vestiges are some loopholed walls and fossilized spaces within the current urban layout, such as the Town Square itself, which constituted the castle’s courtyard.
