Castell de Vilobí – vilobí d’onyar

The castle of Vilobí d’Onyar forms part of the town centre and recalls a time when buildings like this played a very specific role in controlling the surrounding territory. Documented since the Middle Ages, the castle was not only a prominent residence, but also a point of reference within a landscape organised around feudal power, roads and the surrounding lands.

Over the centuries, the building gradually lost part of its strictly defensive character and adapted to new uses, eventually taking on an appearance closer to that of a residential building. This evolution is one of the most interesting aspects of the site, as it helps explain how many castles ceased to be spaces designed for defence and became buildings linked to seigneurial life and the everyday organisation of the municipality.

Today, the castle of Vilobí d’Onyar still preserves the strength of a heritage element integrated into the life of the town. It does not appear as an isolated fortress, but as a piece that helps visitors read the history of the centre and understand how the municipality developed around it. As part of Enselva’t, it is a stop for discovering medieval heritage transformed by time, yet still very present in local identity.
