The Viscounty of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and strongholds, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by the presence of several walled towns and watchtowers.
The oldest structures of Sant Joan castle in Blanes date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, and it was already established at that time to provide effective control of the territory and a place of protection against maritime incursions by pirates. It was attacked by Felip l’Ardit, King of France, in 1285 and by Genoese troops in 1332, conflicts that caused extensive damage to both the fortress and the town, prompting major reforms during the second half of the 14th century. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the castle entered a period of decline and neglect that lasted until its current restoration, which began in the mid-20th century.
