The viscountcy of Cabrera was a territory that, in the religious sphere, comprised various parishes with their churches and hermitages offering religious services for society. Likewise, many different monasteries of various religious orders were founded.
The church of Sant Llorenç was constructed between 1040 and 1070 in a Romanesque architectural style, most notable in the lower part of the apse. In 1207, the associate priest of the parish was Guillem de Cartellà, canon of Girona Cathedral and son of a prominent local noble family, Cartellà-Maçanet, vassals of the viscounts of Cabrera. During the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, elements of the old church would be added, and, in the 17th century, the sacristy would be annexed to the area of the apse. In 1936, the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, a squad of revolutionary organizations set fire to the temple and destroyed the furnishings and religious imagery. After the war, a copy was made of the Mare de Déu de Cabrera (the original was from the 14th century).
