Argimon Castle

The Viscountcy of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the nobility in the Middle Ages. This defensive system was complemented by a number of walled towns and watchtowers.

Situated on the puig d’Argimon, 450 metres above sea level, the present-day sanctuary dates from the 18th century. It is a modern structure located on the site of the ancient castell d’Argimon, «Castro Argimonte». The remains of this ancient building include a square tower eight metres high, which must have had three storeys, and the original 11th-century Romanesque chapel. The castell d’Argimon is documented as early as 925 and formed part of the domain of the Viscounts of Cabrera in the mid-11th century. From the 12th century onwards, it was a territorial castle with jurisdiction over the parishes of Riudarenes, Vallcanera, Castanyet, l’Esparra and Sant Pere Cercada.
