The Viscounty of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and strongholds, which served as the headquarters of the political and military power of the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by the presence of several walled towns and watchtowers.
The oldest structures of Montsoriu Castle date back to the end of the 10th century, at which time it was shaped like a rock castle. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the first great reform was carried out, and Montsoriu was described by the chronicler Bernat Desclot as "one of the most beautiful and noble in the world." The general aspect we see today corresponds to the last great transformation promoted by Viscount Bernat II of Cabrera in the mid-14th century, in which an impregnable castle of concentric circles formed by three large spaces was built: the sovereign enclosure (the most elevated, ancient, and strong part of Montsoriu), the courtyard (conceived as an authentic Gothic palace), and the Jussà enclosure (designed as an inferior albacar).
