The viscounty of Cabrera was articulated through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was supplemented by a number of walled villages and watchtowers.
Pega's Tower, the residence of the Busquets family in the Middle Ages, was previously a fortified house constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries. It consists of a building with a rectangular floor plan, a central patio, and numerous interior rooms. During most of the 13th and 14th centuries, the lords of the Busquets fortified house were also the under-castellans of Montsoriu, the principal castle of the Viscount of Cabrera. Thus, they occupied the second place in the hierarchy responsible for the governance and defense of Montsoriu Castle. The Busquets residence was abandoned, possibly over the course of the 15th century.
