The Viscountcy of Cabrera bordered territories controlled by other feudal lords (the Cardona, Montcada and Cruïlles families, as well as the Church), with whom it maintained neighbourly relations that, depending on the period and circumstances, could be either cordial or conflictive.
The earliest historical documentation relating to Santa Cristina dates from the mid-14th century, although archaeological remains discovered in 2013 suggest much earlier origins, between the 9th and 10th centuries. In the 18th century, the hermitage gained importance as maritime trade expanded, first across the Mediterranean and later towards the Atlantic. As devotion grew, the small hermitage was extensively renovated and enlarged between 1764 and 1772 in a distinctly Neoclassical style. The territory of Lloret de Mar remained under the authority of the canons of Girona Cathedral from the 12th century until the beginning of the 19th century.
