The Viscountcy of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by a number of walled towns and watchtowers.
The torre d’en Pega, known as the domus de Busquets in the Middle Ages, is a former fortified house built between the 12th and 13th centuries. It was a building with a quadrangular floor plan, a central courtyard and several interior rooms. During much of the 13th and 14th centuries, the lords of the fortified house of Busquets were also the deputy castellans of Montsoriu, the principal castle of the Viscountcy of Cabrera. In other words, they occupied the second-highest position in the hierarchy responsible for the governance and defence of the castell de Montsoriu. The domus de Busquets was possibly abandoned during the 15th century.
