The Viscountcy of Cabrera was structured through a network of castles and fortified houses, which served as the seats of political and military power for the medieval nobility. This defensive system was complemented by a number of walled towns and watchtowers.
The torre de Montfort is located on the boundary between the municipal districts of Riells i Viabrea and Arbúcies, on the hill of the same name, which links and overlooks both valleys. It is a military structure consisting of a circular tower surrounded by a small walled enclosure, built in several phases between the 12th and 13th centuries and the first half of the 14th century. Defensive features can still be seen, such as an arrow slit in the tower and the sloping perimeter wall. In the medieval period, it formed part of the defensive system of Montsoriu, the principal castle of the Viscountcy of Cabrera, with which it had visual contact, and served as an advanced watchtower for monitoring the territory and the area’s communication routes.
