The Viscountcy of Cabrera was a territory which, in the religious sphere, comprised various parishes with their respective churches and hermitages, providing religious services to the local community. Several monasteries belonging to different religious orders were also founded there.
Originally, this church was called Sant Esteve de Sabruguera, but at the beginning of the 16th century, an altar dedicated to sant Llop was added, and within a few years, he became its patron saint. The church may date back to the 10th or 11th centuries, and in 1246 it is mentioned in a papal bull issued by Pope Innocenci IV in favour of the monastery of Breda. This rural parish, which already formed part of the Viscountcy of Cabrera in the medieval period (within the territory of the castell de Montsoriu and the batllia de n’Orri), became a suffragan of the parish of Riells between the 16th and 18th centuries. The building and its movable property suffered damage during the Guerra Civil of 1936–1939, and its most recent restoration was carried out in 1982.
