The earthquakes that took place in Amer<\/a> and Olot in 1427 were among the most destructive ever experienced in the Iberian Peninsula. According to studies, it is estimated that the earthquakes had a magnitude of between 6 and 8 degrees on the Richter scale and caused the destruction of towns such as Olot, Amer and Osor<\/a> and several deaths. <\/p>\n

In Amer, the deaths were not caused by the earthquake, but by the gases emitted. According to contemporary accounts, large fumaroles and tongues of blue fire emerged from four points on a mountain, causing a geological fissure four meters deep and eighty centimeters wide, called the Hell’s Crack<\/strong> . <\/p>\n

From the 15th century to the present day, there have been more earthquakes in the area, although of lesser intensity, so they have generally gone unnoticed. However, the earth movements have caused many of the Amer springs to disappear. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
